Dear Readers,
I’m pleased to announce the publication of my newest calendar, The Jewish Eye 5785/2025 Calendar of Art. This is my 10th year publishing this unique collection of art and writing, featuring twelve new paintings and one children’s book illustration. Creating all this content and designing the calendar itself has become a joyful seasonal ritual, taking up many weeks of my winter each year. I tend the fire in my woodstove as I research, conceptualize, and bring ideas into visual and written form. It’s an enriching process that I look forward to, and that I hope will offer value to you.
As always, the images are inspired by Jewish culture and holidays; landscapes in Israel; neighborhoods in Jerusalem; core concepts of Jewish spirituality; stories from the Torah (Hebrew Bible); and historical events.
Yet the calendar speaks to something larger as well. In creating this artwork, I strive to express concepts that are both particular to Jewish tradition and universally human. Christian readers and art appreciators will find resonance in my depictions of classic Biblical stories, such as Moses’ bravery at the well in Midian; Elijah’s wilderness refuge; and Ezekiel’s vision of a peaceful, heavenly Jerusalem. Buddhists may relate to the themes of oneness and duality in my painting D’vekut and impermanence in Shehecheyanu. Also included are an image of parenting as an expression of divine love; a portrait of harvest workers bearing the seven sacred fruits and grains of the Bible; and three still lifes that capture a picturesque moment in individual lives.
In other words, you don’t have to be Jewish, or religious, to appreciate The Jewish Eye!
The calendar covers the thirteen months of the Jewish year, which is lunisolar, from September 2024 through September 2025. Rosh Hashanah marks the beginning of the Jewish year 5785 on October 2nd, 2024. Between now and then, most of my posts in this newsletter will feature the paintings from the calendar, sharing the stories and creative processes behind each image.
The grids are in both Hebrew and English; and include Hebrew and Gregorian calendar dates; Jewish and secular holidays; the weekly Torah portion; and candle-lighting times for the Sabbath. If you still keep track of personal dates on paper, there is room to write on the grid. But for most folks these days, this wall calendar is a reference for Jewish time and a changing collection of art and writing to inspire you throughout the year.
Special thanks to my wonderful printer, GraphicColor Printing, who did a terrific job again this year. The calendar is printed on high quality glossy paper, and measures 8.5”x11” (11”x17” when open).
The calendar is priced at $17.95 on Amazon, and $20.95 from my website (including shipping), where you can view all thirteen images and a detail of the grid. If you order from Amazon, please consider writing a review! Positive reviews are tremendously helpful in moving the calendar up in Amazon’s search engine, and boosting sales. If you do this, as a token of thanks I will send a second calendar or a free signed poster to you or the recipient of your choice. Just let me know when your review is published: dyaelbernhard@protonmail.com.
